Rex Ryen, the stubborn and intemperate ruler, insists on imposing a huge tax increase on the High Holders (landowners) and factors (merchants), a demand the High Holders contemptuously disregard. On his arrival, Alastar finds that imager training has languished, and senior imagers with divided loyalties have allowed factionalism and a culture of bullying to take hold among the student body. To his own surprise, Alastar, a talented senior imager (wizard) who’s all but unknown in the capital, L’Excelsis, and has little knowledge of conditions there, learns he has been selected as the new Maitre. The ninth book in the Imager series moves on some 380 years from the previous entry ( Antiagon Fire, 2013).įor a century, the influence of Solidar's Collegium of Imagers has waned, due to weak leadership, lack of ambition and a willingness to contribute nothing except political loyalty in return for the Rex’s monetary support. ![]()

The cat on the hot roof6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It had seemed an inspired pairing – she, the talented movie star who had proven her stage chops with her Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s “ A View From The Bridge” he the Southern-born son-in-law of Meryl Streep whose performance on stage in “ Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson” was so sexy that it was the centerpiece of the show’s marketing campaign the Bloody, Bloody logo was a close-up of Benjamin Walker’s butt. I had been looking forward to this, the sixth Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ scorching family drama set in the high-ceilinged home of the biggest plantation in the Mississippi Delta. The couple next to us left during the second intermission, but they must have had a problem with their babysitter. “Cat On A Hat Tin Roof” with Scarlett Johansson and Benjamin Walker could not possibly be so dull, I said during the first intermission I just must be tired. Set in Haiti but filmed in Dahomey (now Benin) it struck me more for its depiction of life under the Papa Doc Duvalier dictatorship than for the film as a whole. Knowing that Greene himself wrote the screenplay makes the broadside against Duvalier all the more understandable. Featuring a stellar cast of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Alec Guiness, Peter Ustinov and a young James Earl Jones it proved less of a hit than one would have predicted given the talent and funding it received. ![]() In 1967 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released the film version of Graham Greene’s novel The Comedians.
